A word search game that actually teaches you vocabulary
Most word search puzzles are just letters — find the word, move on, forget it five minutes later. My Vocabulary Tracker's word search game is built differently: every puzzle is generated from real vocabulary — a curated word pack (business, exam prep, everyday English) or your own saved words — and the moment you find a word, you see exactly what it means. You're not just hunting letters, you're reviewing vocabulary while you play.
It works entirely in your browser, no download or install required, and every puzzle is generated and scored on our server, so no two games play out the same way twice.
See it in action
Below is a live preview of a Moderate-difficulty puzzle — watch it find a word horizontally, then vertically, then diagonally, exactly like a real game.
How a game works, step by step
- Choose a difficulty and a word source. Play with words from a curated pack (Business Essentials, Finance, Marketing, exam-prep packs and more) or from your own saved vocabulary.
- Drag across the grid to select a word — it can run left-to-right, top-to-bottom, or diagonally, depending on the difficulty.
- See the meaning the instant you find it. A correct word flashes green and its definition becomes visible in the word list.
- Use a hint if you're stuck — a limited number are available per game, and using one costs a small score penalty.
- Finish when you're ready. Your score is calculated from words found, hints used, and how quickly you finished — never trusted from your browser, always calculated on our server so scores can't be faked.
Three difficulty levels
Each difficulty changes the grid size, word count, allowed directions, and how many hints you get — so the game stays challenging as your vocabulary grows.
| Difficulty | Grid size | Words | Directions | Hints | Score multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 10 × 10 | 6 | Horizontal & vertical | 3 | 1.0× |
| Moderate | 15 × 15 | 10 | + diagonals (forward) | 2 | 1.5× |
| Hard | 20 × 20 | 15 | All 8 directions | 1 | 2.0× |
On Hard difficulty, the word list shows each word's meaning instead of the word itself until you find it — so you're recalling the word from its definition, not just pattern-matching letters.
How scoring works
Points come from four places: 100 points per word found (multiplied by the difficulty's score multiplier), a 300-point bonus for finding every word, up to 500 more for finishing quickly, and a 500-point bonus for using zero hints. Each hint you use costs 100 points. Stuck past 15 minutes? You can reveal every answer — but doing so ends that game with a score of 0, so it's a genuine last resort, not a shortcut.
Challenge a friend
Every game can be turned into an asynchronous challenge — generate a link, send it to a friend, and they play the exact same puzzle you did. Scores are compared once you've both finished, so you can see who found more words, faster. No account is needed to view an invite, only to play it.

Frequently asked questions
Is the word search game free to play?
Yes. Word Search is included free with a My Vocabulary Tracker account — no separate purchase or subscription.
Do I need to sign in to play?
Yes, playing a game requires a free account (sign-in with Google) so your scores and progress can be saved. You don't need an account just to read about the feature on this page.
Where do the words in each puzzle come from?
Either a curated word pack you choose (Business Essentials, Finance, Marketing, exam-prep packs and more) or your own personal saved vocabulary — you pick the source each time you start a game.
Can I play with a friend?
Yes — generate a challenge link from any game and send it to a friend. You'll both play the identical puzzle and can compare scores once you've finished.
What happens if I can't finish?
You can always stop and finish early for whatever score you've earned so far. After 15 minutes, you can also reveal every answer — but that locks the game in at a score of 0.
